things we love… straws

straws.  our kids love them, we love them.  no matter what color or shape or size, we are always looking use one.  at home, we love to use kikkerland paper straws for two reasons.  they look really cool in the straw dispenser, and they are biodegradable.  win win.  and they go great in lemonade, so go out and grab some this summer.  enjoy.

lindsey & kevin…

little did i know how expressive a bride could be until i met lindsey.  from the moment we walked into her hotel room until the last song of the night, she had the most expressive expressions i have seen yet.  and we love that.  capturing emotion and moments is what we strive for, and well with lindsey & kevin, that was easy to do.  lindsey & kevin were married at our saviors lutheran church in rockford.  after an amazing and emotional ceremony, we all headed up to the pavilion at orchard ridge farms to celebrate the night away.  we played for a bit with everyone in the bridal party before spending some quality alone time with newlyweds lindsey & kevin.  the vast rolling hills, organic apple orchard, and breathtaking scenery at orchard ridge farms was the perfect backdrop to a perfect couple.  lindsey did an amazing job with the details of her wedding.  and we always tell brides that details are so important.  from the pinwheel bouquets to the yellow shoes, accents on her flowers & purse to the gentlemen’s craspedia billy balls boutonnieres, the table centerpieces, flower girl dress, cupcakes, and place cards all had the perfect amount of yellow.  enjoy.

a lot of bees…

last week the only thing i knew about bees is that they hang out in our garden and will occasionally sting you if you swat at them.  i learned a lot on sunday.  my cousin kris & her husband ron live in chicago and have been raising bees for 4 years now.  they enjoy it not only as a hobby and to get some fresh honey, but to help repopulate the bee population.  so when they were headed out to davis, illinois on sunday, the kids & i joined them for some bee education.  we arrived at raines bee farm around three in the afternoon and the place was buzzing.  ha.  you see, around 800,000 bees had just arrived and car after car after car of beekeepers were arriving to pick up their orders.  the bees were close to the finish line of a non-stop cross country trip.  four days prior, they were harvested in california, placed into crates (10,000 worker bees and one queen in each crate), and trucked non-stop to northern wisconsin, and finally to raines bee farm.  there’s a small window of time that the bees can remain in transit to time is of the essence.

after kris & ron picked up their crate of 10,001 bees (i wouldn’t want to be the guy who counts them as they’re loaded into the crates), we got a crash course on beekeeping from phil the beekeeper.  we also met joey the juggling bee. phil showed this amazing worker bee to cashin & brig.  he held onto joey upside down and handed the little guy a piece of beeswax, and joey proceeded to juggle the wax around and around and around with his little feet up in the air.  it amazed the kids, and us adults as well.  phil even told cashin & brig that daddy could train a bee to do that next year too.

next year?  yes, i’m hooked.  i would have taken a crate of 10,001 with me, but all 800,000 bees were already spoken for.  so this summer, the boys and i are going to build some bee boxes, and put our order in for next april.  hopefully by next summer, we’ll have some tasty local honey or our own.  oh and if you want some of raines bee farm honey (it is delicious), you can meet phil & his beekeeping crew this summer at the rockford city market.

enjoy.

megan & micah… a winter engagement

they may be a bit crazy.  but that’s why we love them.  megan called me in february to inquire about her december wedding.  in our first phone conversation she wanted to check on a date for her engagement session.  i told her that we had plenty of time to talk about that when the weather cleared up.  this is when i first got a glimpse into megan & micah’s personalities.  she told me that the engagement session had to be the very next weekend, because she would be in town from school.  then she added that micah was originally from alaska and they wanted to shoot the engagement session in the snow.  so… the next weekend, i headed out to trevor, wisconsin.  it was in the single digits that day and there was a bit of a wind.  basically, it was freezing.  but they were troopers.  after spending some time at the barn where megan stables her horse, we trekked across some wide open fields to a pine tree forest.  they laughed, they played, we all got red noses.  enjoy.

jamie & dan…

jamie & dan are fanatical about a few things in life.  vespas, volkswagens, and each other.  this past fall, we took a little trip with them and one of their VW busses.  after some fun in an abandoned barn, they had a little picnic before heading home.  and wouldn’t you know it, in true VW form, they had to make a stop for some roadside repairs.  thank god that dan is handy on an engine and that there were a few extra fat tire’s in the cooler.  enjoy.
